Most mainstream laundry detergents are packed with a cocktail of synthetic ingredients that go far beyond cleaning. Some of the most common include:

  • Artificial fragrances – often made from petroleum-derived chemicals, they’re linked to hormone disruption, allergies, and even respiratory issues.
     

  • Optical brighteners – chemicals that coat fabric to give the illusion of whiteness, but may cause skin irritation and are toxic to aquatic life.
     

  • Dyes and colourants – synthetic dyes (often coal-tar based) used purely for aesthetic purposes have no cleaning benefit and are known skin irritants.
     

  • Phosphates – once widespread in detergents, they’ve been largely restricted due to their contribution to algal blooms that choke waterways and harm aquatic ecosystems.
